Action is an integral part of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and an opportunity for students to seek the opportunity to make a significant contribution to their local and global communities. It is a core component of agency and offers learners the ability to see that they can not only make a meaningful contribution to the world around them but also be change-makers. In the PYP, ‘Taking Action’ is broken into five essential elements: Participation, Advocacy, Social Justice, Social Entrepreneurship and Lifestyle Choices. These ideas have been put together to support these elements of action, and to encourage learners to take meaningful action to make a difference in the world.

Community Outreach is carried forward in middle school through various engagements which help bring out the Cambridge learner attributes of students being engaged, confident, responsible, reflective and innovative. They are given opportunities to reach out to and interact with various organisations and work towards various causes. Some community outreach initiatives at DBIS are :

• Grade 7 students taught Scratch to the students from Angel Express as an activity in ICT.
• Grade 8 students attended a session of Wheelchair Cricket organised by the Sports and the Global Perspectives Department. A group of wheelchair cricketers were invited to school where they spoke to the students about the challenges they face in sport as differently abled and how sport is empowering. They also expressed their wish to have more exposure and facilities for the differently abled sportspeople.
• The Bosco Community Sports Club organised a friendly game between the students of a special school along with some students from our middle school. This was an opportunity for them to play and interact with the intellectually differently abled children from Shishu Kalyan Kendra.

CAS which stands for Community, Activity and Service is a part of the Core in IBDP along with Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. It is the only ungraded component in IBDP where the students have to meet the seven learning outcomes at least once through various experiences they undergo in their 2 years of IBDP. What makes CAS special is that it is student initiated. Students can choose to pursue an activity or experience of their liking either to express their creativity, pursue a physical activity or be a part of community service.

Our IBDP students have been extremely enterprising! Some commendable CAS initiatives by our DBIS students have been:

• Mentee meet, a mentoring program by Vritee Muni for the students and by the students. Its aim was to guide and help students from Grade 8 to 12 with subject choices and help them decide which curriculum would work for them and also career choices.
• Crackbox – An website created by Trishit Dedhia for educators and learners where they can upload and download study material in the form of creative posters designed by a team of students.
• Gupt Daan – A CAS initiative by Karan Khadenwal, Keshav Nagpal and Kashish Bote to distribution dry food ration kits in the rural areas in Maharashtra turned out to be an all school initiative where DBIS distributed around 1100 kits across villages in Maharashtra during the first wave on the pandemic.
• The students have had the privilege to work with some of the best of the theatre and film industry through their workshops with Mr. Cyrus Dastur from Shamiana Shorts and Mr. Sudeep Modak of Mr. Sudeep Modak Theatre Company where they students learnt the finer nuances of theatre and films and created their own pieces as a culmination

CAS is a great platform for students to explore their personalities and find ways to learn new things while improving on the ones they already know well. We at DBIS are extremely proud of our enterprising and empathetic student endeavours!

The club will be a non-profit organization and all activities and sports conducted are Leisure and Fun activities. Events are organized twice a month on weekends and school holidays.
