The students of Don Bosco International School, experienced diplomacy at the annual United Nations simulation conference; with students donning the role of a delegate and representing the countries from all over the world!
DBIS’s MUN was held on the 24th of January, 2019 in Bianchi Hall. The agenda was set as; Reducing Carbon Emission Footprints for Sustainable Development.The students grasped the severity of the issue which two decades of disappointing efforts to act decisively on carbon emissions; have led to the earth becoming hotter and more polluted.
However, for the Global Economy there is still a window of opportunity, fast closing; to scale back pollution and tame the rising heat. The participants researched their country’s state of affairs in relevance to the topic. After training, they stepped into the shoes of the diplomats and represented their country in the conference. They debated and brought across new and realistic solutions; to resolve the world’s conflict with their own resolutions.
Representatives verbally responded to circumstances as they arose to make impromptu queries and gave replies based on their knowledge and research. They also deliberated and took decisions on behalf of their member states; directly from the floor of the UN.
The objective of training students for this session, was to ensure that they learn to be Global Citizens and can practically use their political knowledge. This helped them in getting an experience of how UN diplomats’ work and improved their negotiation and public speaking skills. Furthermore, in the process they emerged as a good team-workers and leaders.
The pandemic hasn’t ceased to hurl obstacles at us. However, DBIS has caught up with them, and is now one step ahead. The Student Council kick-started the year with the first activity- the online MUN. Saying that organising it was arduous would certainly be an understatement. Teachers from various departments put their heads together and came up with a viable way in which the MUN could be carried out on an e-platform, with minimal difficulties.
The organising committee comprising teachers (Ms. Aarti, Ms. Shermin, Ms. Somya, Mr. Shannon, Ms. Jenicia,Ms. Sonal, Ms. Hemangni and the IT department under the watchful gaze of Ms. Meena and Ms. Anita) and student representatives (Aradhya, Kanishk, Aisha, Tejas and Shalom) worked diligently to string together the various aspects that made the MUN and put it up for our enthusiastic students and parents to watch. The whole experience was exhilarating. After months of burning the midnight oil, the organising committee, assisted by a variety of mentors from Grade 11, trained the chosen delegates and honed their skills in various aspects, be it analysing, researching, communicating, working in a team or speaking. After rigorous preparation, DBIS was ready.
The lists had been devised. The platform had been finalised. Meetings were held. And the school looked forward to the MUN in anticipation. The MUN was the first event of the academic year of 2020-21 and a great response were expected. The students and staff of DBIS ensured that these hopes were transcended as both sets of studentsthe juniors and seniors- put up a pyrotechnic show as they confidently, debated, voiced their opinions and spoke ardently for their respective countries. Every minute of hard work was not futile, but resulted in a grand success. DBIS was immensely proud of its students who prove that they could shine in a classroom, sports ground and co-curricular activities. The students were presented with a resplendent opportunity and they were prudent enough to grab it. DBIS’ first online event was a success and we hope to see many more!!
